Abstract: Pseudoboehmite and its derivative were prepared from polyaluminum chloride. EDX, XRD and low temperature nitrogen adsorption-desorption were employed to characterize the samples obtained. The effects of alkaline, polyethylene glycol(PEG) surfactant with different molecular weights on phase and surface area of pseudoboehmite were investigated. The results show that NH3·H2O and NaOH can be used as alkaline solution to prepare pure pseudoboehmite. γ-Al2O3 can be obtained in the range of 450 to 750 ℃. Surface area and pore volume decrease but the diameter increases with the increase of calcination temperature. With the increase of PEG molecular weight, the surface area and pore volume of γ-Al2O3 first increases, then decreases. PEG1000 is most suitable for increasing surface area of γ-Al2O3 and surface area of 396 m2·g-1 can be obtained.
