Abstract: Hydrothermal reaction of olsalazine sodium, phenanthroline and Cd(ClO4)2·6H2O or Co(NO3)2·6H2O in the presence of water and ethanol afford two coordination polymers respectively: [Cd(OSA)(Phen)(H2O)]n (1) (OSA=3,3′-azobis(6-hydroxy-benzoic acid)) and [Co(OSA)(Phen)(H2O)]n (2). Their structures were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Both complexes are one-dimensional polymers, for complex 1 with crystal data: C2/c, a=1.967 92(6) nm, b=1.191 27(5) nm, c=2.151 03(8) nm, β=103.8180(10)°, V=4.896 8(3) nm3, Z=8, R1=0.024 5, wR2=0.088 7, for complex 2 with crystal data: C2/c, a=1.917 75(17) nm, b=1.162 95(17) nm, c=2.162 9(2) nm, β=103.153(2)°, V=4.697 4(9) nm3, Z=8, R1=0.042 9, wR2=0.096 5. In both complexes, central atoms (Cd or Co) adopt five-coordinated triangle bipyramidal coordination geometry and each olsalazine ligand acting as a bidentate ligand bridges two different metal atoms through monodentate coordination mode of two carboxylates.
