Abstract: Barium benzoate was synthesized in semi-solid phase reaction. The complex was characterized by elemental analysis, IR, X-ray powder diffraction. It is layered structure, monoclinic system. The mechanism of thermal decomposition for barium benzoate was studied by using TG, DTA, IR and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer. The thermal decompositon of barium benzoate in nitrogen proceeded in one stage: it decomposed to form BaCO3 and organic compounds. The organic compounds obtained from decomposition reaction are mainly benzophenone, triphenylmethane and so on.
